Only at Another Place
Lakes, links, beaches, fells, forest schools, art hotels, whisky distilleries. Yes, there are lots to choose from all over the British Isles and beyond. But here, we create and curate experiences in a way that feels like nowhere else. Here are ten things you’ll only do at Another Place – in the Lake District, on the Scottish island of Islay, or both.
1. Light their (and your) fires
WHERE? Another Place, The Lake
Your children can cook over the fire (in our OFSTED-registered Kids’ Zone childcare and forest school, included in every stay, all year round) – while you go waterfall swimming, paddleboarding or just play Scrabble/ drink cocktails by the library or The Brackenrigg Inn fires.
2. Feel gloriously alone, on a world top 100 course
WHERE? Another Place, The Machrie
People travel from all over the globe to play our world-class links course, The Machrie, Islay – and it regularly features in international rankings, golf magazines and awards. Yet you can play a round here and feel like you have it all to yourself. Step into a natural amphitheatre surrounded by nothing but dunes, ocean and eagles soaring overhead – with our warm Hebridean welcome waiting just a few steps from the 18th.
3. Surprise yourself, under the stars
WHERE? Another Place, The Lake
Take the plunge and do something you never thought you would: go coldwater swimming in the lake at night, floating beneath distant galaxies. International champion and open water swimming expert Colin Hill will guide and support you through every splash and stroke. And warming Dry Robes, heated floors and a hot shower in the ‘sheep shed’ lakeside changing rooms, and a fireside cocktail will be waiting on the other side.
4. Taste whiskies you won’t find anywhere else
WHERE? Another Place, The Machrie
There may be other ‘bucket list’ world Top 100 golf courses with whisky distilleries nearby – but here on Islay, ‘the whisky island’, you’ll find not just one, or two, but ten (and counting) world-famous distilleries to explore in between rounds. Walk or cycle the Three Distilleries Pathway, or taste exceedingly rare editions in 18 Restaurant & Bar, thanks to our relationship with the Islay Whisky Vault.
5. Let us move you, with extra touches
WHERE? Another Place, The Lake and Another Place, The Machrie
Free wetsuits, Warm Welly Company wellies, Out ‘n’ About buggies, bespoke walking guides, OS Maps, even a 7-seater Landrover Discovery to take you to the trail… However and wherever you want to move around, we’ll lend you what you need to get out there and be active your way (all included in your Lake District stay). And at The Machrie, we have a fleet of fatbikes for exploring the beach and island.
6. Turn your eyes to the skies – and seas
WHERE? Another Place, The Machrie
Spot Attenborough-worthy wildlife (as featured in his Wild Isles series on the BBC) in the skies and seas around you as you play in the dunes and bunkers behind a seven-mile beach. Or take to the water on a wildlife boat trip to get up close with dolphins, swimming stags, seals and even minke whales for the lucky few.
7. Soak, sweat, or swing your way to wild happiness
WHERE? Another Place, The Lake and Another Place, The Machrie
A freestanding bath on a treehouse deck or shepherd hut window; floating in the fell-view pool; looking out from the fellside sauna or swinging under an ancient oak tree – different perspectives on the same “sublime” views of Ullswater and the fells. Or keep watch for a rare glimpse of the Northern Lights from the hot tub, sauna and cold plunge in our Scandinavian-style wild garden at The Machrie.
8. Link art, oysters, whisky and golf
WHERE? Another Place, The Machrie
Where else can you eat a full Scottish breakfast, or try an oyster luge, looking out over a world-class championship links to the Atlantic beyond, with artworks by Peter Blake, Stanley Spencer and John Hoyland looking down at you – and Tracey Emin, Pat Douthwaite, John Bellany, Banksy and many more beckoning on the walls beyond?
9. Learn, see, try something new
WHERE? Another Place, The Lake and Another Place, The Machrie
Is it golf, yoga, pilates, wild swimming, cycling or art that lights you up? Join one of our active breaks to come together with like-minded people and experts in their fields to inspire and guide you. Look out for new breaks (Golf at The Machrie, Cycling at The Lake) on the horizon for 2026, Colin Hill’s endless pool sessions to analyse and refine your swim stroke, and more artist residencies and workshops lining up at The Lake too.
10. Fuel your adventures, freely
WHERE? Another Place, The Lake and Another Place, The Machrie
DIY breakfast waffles, Tunnocks Teacakes, a Stanley flask full of coffee, a cinnamon bun or salmon bagel from breakfast eaten on the summit. All included in your stay – how you burn them off is up to you.
