Sarah Taylor: Outside Exhibition

‘Embers’ the fox somewhere in the shrubbery, ‘Elvis’ the goat high up in a tree… This autumn, we’re collaborating with Lake District artist Sarah Taylor on a refreshing new exhibition among our shoreside gardens, meadows and treescapes.
Art outside
With her work in galleries and private collections from the Lake District and Scotland to the US and Australia, Sarah is renowned for her larger-than-life portraits of creatures great and small.
Her vibrantly coloured canvasses have a distinctive graphic style, which are full of energy thanks to her unusual ink-blowing technique. She’s also no stranger to showing her work out in the elements, having previously exhibited along the Eskdale valley railway line as part of Cumbrian arts festival, C-Art.
We were already big fans of Sarah’s creations, which feature on the walls of the library, Rampsbeck restaurant and several bedrooms inside the hotel.
But with the recent relandscaping of our gardens and launch of the new Outside spaces – including an architect-designed treehouse, six shepherd huts and a Victorian-style Glasshouse – we jumped at the opportunity to display her larger scale work in this inspiring natural setting.
Explore the outside exhibition
Until the end of October, we’re inviting you to roam around the gardens to see if you can find all ten of Sarah’s canvasses hanging among the autumn foliage.
There will also be a giant colouring wall and related activities inside Kids’ Zone (free childcare sessions for all hotel guests).
“Galleries can be quite stuffy and unapproachable for people, so I love the idea of stumbling across some art while exploring a beautiful garden,” says Sarah. “To have a huge painting in a tree – why not?! It makes you smile. That’s what my art is all about.”
The pieces all feature British wildlife – animals that can be seen around the hotel and on the local fells, like squirrels, deer and highland cows. Their flashes of colour will complement the flowers, leaves, ferns and grasses in landscape architect Laurel Truscott’s redesigned gardens, which have a strong focus on biodiversity and a multisensory outdoor experience.
