Hotel restaurants
Another Place
The Another Place hotel on Ullswater lake has three lake-side restaurants. The Living Space, Rampsbeck and The Glasshouse.
The Living Space
This relaxed space offers doorstop sandwiches, inventive salads and firm favourites including fish and chips, burgers and curries. Children, dogs and wetsuits welcome…
The Rampsbeck
Cumbrian-inspired dishes change with the season in this more formal dining area. A good wine list accompanies local produce including Herdwick Lamb, Morecambe Bay shrimps and perhaps even some Sticky Toffee Pudding.
The Glasshouse
Serving pizza five days a week, cocktails and coffee. Where the boundaries of inside blur with outside.
Situated on the fell walkway between Sandwick and Patterdale, the Lowther Tea Room at Beckside Farm offers a welcome rest and refreshment stop for walkers journeying from the Steamer pier at Glenridding or Howtown. The tea room is a delightful place to rest your weary legs, enjoy the views and some delicious food.
For Afternoon Tea
Sharrow Bay
If it’s traditional afternoon tea you’re after in decadent and sumptuous surroundings, then nowhere tops the lakeside location of England’s original country house hotel, Sharrow Bay.
Loose leaf tea, freshly pressed coffee and hand cut sandwiches are accompanied by delicate and delicious pastries, cakes and scones. The only thing you have to worry about – jam or cream first??
For A View from the Bridge
Granny Dowbekin’s Tearooms
The Granny Dowbekin story begins in 1904 when the building was bequeathed to the butler and housekeeper of a local country house. Having spent their lives in service, it seemed only natural that in creating their own business, they would choose to do what they do best. Thus a tearoom was born where the river meets the lake in pretty Pooley Bridge.
Over a century later and while the owners have changed, the welcome, the service and promise of good food has not. The team still bake their pies, cakes and scones fresh every single day; it’s still a meeting place for friends and family from far and wide; and it still offers the best vantage point in the village from which to enjoy views of the both the river Eamont and beautiful Ullswater.
For a Pub Lunch
The George and Dragon
The George and Dragon is an 18th century coaching inn. It has been lovingly restored by local craftsmen who have reused stone, slate flags, design and colours sympathetic to the Georgian
Comfy sofas, bare wooden tables and intimate alcoves make it a perfect place to relax and unwind. Photographs, paintings, old prints and archive images tell stories of the Lowther Estate’s unique heritage. And over time, more stories will be added.
Enjoy a pint of local ale, relax with a glass of fine wine and indulge in the Lowther produce, feeling that you’re somewhere rather unique.

For Pie-Lovers
Queen’s Head Tirril
Originally built in 1719 the Queen’s Head in Tirril has been in use as a Pub since that time gathering over the years all the bric a brac, memorabilia and character you would expect from an age old Inn – the Queen’s Head is a great example of a classic British pub with old world charm in every nook and cranny.
And now for a little known fact outside of local circles – The Queens Head in Tirril proudly stock the award-winning Pie Mill pies. They have a pie page on their menu at all times featuring featuring a great selection and every other Wednesday they have a pie night which includes a pie, vegetables, gravy, mash/chips with a pint/small glass of wine for £10.
The pies have become a main talking point at the Queens Head– customers comment on their love of these delicious pies; from the fact that they are individual pies with excellent shortcrust pastry and not just a pastry lid to their enjoyment of lots of meat filling and not empty space when you cut into it. Other comments include the richness of the fillings, the quality of the meat used, tender & succulent, how every pie can look a little different – evidence of the individual hand-made aspect.
