Artist in Residence: Charlotte Beavor
When BBC Interior Designer Masters contestant and award-winning designer Charlotte Beevor joined us as artist-in-residence at Another Place, The Lake, we knew we were in for something special. Her organic painterly style and fascination with lesser-noticed colour and textures intrigued us – and we were excited to see how our space and surroundings would inspire her.

Charlotte spent several days with us, wandering the landscape and painting from her temporary studio, The Glasshouse. The floor-to-ceiling windows and ever-changing light brought her endless perspectives on the land and sky.
Creativity flowed. And the end result? A bespoke, bold and energetic Ullswater-inspired wallpaper that now lines our lobby at The Lake. We couldn’t be happier with it.
We asked Charlotte to tell us more about her experience at Another Place and the inspiration for her work:
“During my residency, I was lucky enough to see Another Place in several climates and experience its many different moods. Some days were sunny with blue skies, which was idyllic, peaceful and amazing for visibility. Another day it hailed three times while I was out hiking. In the stormy weather, it’s atmospheric, moody and almost feels like you’re in a black and white movie set. The weather here can shift in an instant, which means the mood can change quickly too. You might even experience different moods throughout a single day – but having the best of both worlds was really inspiring to me. You can see the colours come through in the wallpaper.
I’m also inspired by details. I might look at the shapes of plants – but I’m much more interested in painting or drawing the markings and textures on the leaves.
Colour is a big part of my work too. It’s a key feature in everything I do, from textiles to interiors. Again, I like to find the less obvious colours and spaces, like the tiny pops of colour on the mountain top…they elevate the mountain but you might not normally notice it.
During my residency, I wanted to represent Another Place’s colours but also pick out some of the more quirky tones. There’s a bright cobalt blue arch, for example, that leads to the marina next to the hotel grounds. You probably wouldn’t imagine a cobalt blue when you think of Another Place, but it’s here. For me, it’s about looking around, trying to find what is making up the landscape and playing with it in different ratios – and there’s loads to play with here!

The Glasshouse was an idyllic space to work in. It’s normally a restaurant, of course, but while I was there it felt like the most amazing studio. We moved tables and chairs aside and put in lines so that I could hang up work. On warm days I could open the windows and let the breeze in. Everywhere I looked I got a new view, so it really was the perfect place for me to work from. I feel very lucky to have been there.
For my final piece, the wallpaper, my inspiration came from one of my long walks in the rain. On that particular day I got a completely different perspective of the hills and scenery, as if everything was in black and white. The textures and shapes I noticed inspired me to create some of the patterns in the wallpaper design using a mixture of acrylic paints and oil pastels.

I think the wallpaper makes a great statement from the moment you step into the lobby. I wanted to create something impactful and totally unique to Another Place with an artistic, outdoor-indoor vibe that was different from just using houseplants. Walking through the entrance becomes an experience rather than just a quick stepping stone to reception.”
