Place Fell

A 12km advanced hike that begins with a boat ride across Ullswater before following the lakeside trail to Lowther Barn. A steady climb through moorland leads to the 657m summit, where sweeping views of the Helvellyn range and Patterdale await.

Drive to Glenridding car park (CA11 0PD), buy your ticket for the 30-minute Ullswater Steamer boat ride to Howtown where the walk begins.

Sturdy walking shoes, a waterproof coat, a drink, sun cream, hat, camera.

Look down

Place Fell offers panoramic views of the fells stretching far beyond Ullswater, and down into the famous steep-sided valleys to the east, which are home to England’s oldest herd of Red Deer.
