Art at The Machrie
“I like the idea of all these unusual places where art can be found and enjoyed at leisure.” – Sue Nye, curator of The Machrie art collection.

Will you sleep soundly beneath a Pat Douthwaite pastel? Work up a sweat in the gym with Michael Craig-Martin? Relax after a round beside John Byrne's Black Angel?
From Antony Gormley to Tracey Emin, Banksy to Bob and Roberta Smith, a stay at The Machrie grants up-close-and-personal access to works by some of the leading names in contemporary art.

Made in Scotland
From the snug to the sitting room, the restaurant to the reception desk, a dazzling spectrum of pieces by acclaimed Scottish artists – including John Bellany, Peter Howson, Bruce McLean, Dame Elizabeth Blackadder, Pat Douthwaite, John Lowry Morrison and Eduardo Paolozzi – injects inimitable Scottish personality, wit and grit.
The latest major addition to the collection, L’ange Noir (The Black Angel), by the Scottish artist, playwright, screenwriter and designer John Byrne, keeps watch over the stag lounge.

Sheep by Blek Le Rat
Street art in the wild
A series of street art pieces fizz with anti-establishment energy from their position on the hotel walls.
Spot Sheep, an iconic 2006 screenprint by the French ‘father of stencil graffiti art’ Blek Le Rat, posters from Banksy’s 2023 Cut & Run show in Glasgow, and a 2018 print by British street artist Stik, known for his socially-conscious murals featuring his distinctive stick figures.
Prints, posters and scarves
Original posters by influential artists like Brendan Neilan mingle with the first poster acquired for The Machrie, the rare Second World War print, Shipbuilding on the Clyde: Burners 1940, by Stanley Spencer.
The Machrie collection also spotlights the many artists who explored textiles as a creative medium, with works by Picasso, Miro, Sonia Delaunay and Dali on display.
Framed vintage scarves by Hermès and Gucci reveal a recurring golf theme in a playful nod to The Machrie’s world-class links.
Hare of the dog
A characterful cast of animals calls the Machrie’s walls and hallways home. But you won’t find taxidermy trophies here. Instead, quirky photographs, lively oil paintings and a mad cow made of (what else?) old rugs, rule the roost.
Admire German artist Fabian von Spreckelsen’s corten steel stag head, follow the hologram gaze of two 3D lenticular deer photographs by Allan Forsyth and say hello to the elegant Silver Horse by ‘the horse painter’ Huw Williams.
Irish contemporary artist Heidi Wickham’s Big Hare mirrors the hares on The Machrie golf course, while Tall Dog, also by Wickham, stands guard in the restaurant.
