Behind the design - The Joules suite
(6 minute read)
Curated by Joules’ creative team, the design is shaped by nature and the striking landscape of the Lake District.
The spacious suite spans over 50 square metres and offers views over Ullswater and the surrounding fells, and beautifully appointed interiors. Since its launch the Joules suite has been continuously refreshed with the latest prints and collections.
We asked Joules to talk through the inspiration behind the suite.
Behind the design
At Another Place you’ll find many rooms, but only one has a brass knocker on the door, in the shape of a hare. So, come on in, we’re going through the door and behind the design of the Joules suite…
It was ten years ago, after sponsoring a Polo on the Beach event that Joules first struck up a partnership with Watergate Bay Hotel (sister hotel to Another Place) and it’s a relationship that has gone from strength to strength.
When visiting Another Place and Watergate Bay, take a look at the clothing worn by the staff – from the front of house and front desk to maintenance, housekeeping and even the wonderful people in the Kids’ Zone teams – each member will be looking effortlessly stylish, thanks to our classic and timeless pieces.
So, when we were approached by Another Place to give one of their hotel suites a breath of fresh air, we jumped at the chance. Led by one of our creative team and our Partnerships Manager, Vicky, we started to wonder just how our design ethos would transfer from dresses and wellies to walls and bathrooms.
“We wanted to enhance the existing features of the room and celebrate the Lake District. Using the moods created for our seasonal clothing collections, we got to work…”
Art Director, Joules
At Joules, we design clothing, footwear and accessories for the seasons, spring-summer and autumn-winter, and we wanted the suite to reflect this. We also wanted to create a bespoke experience that Joules’ customers, both new and old, would love.
What better place to start than by leafing through our mood books? We revisited the colour palettes, textures and imagery that had inspired our collections and carefully considered how they could influence and enhance the space we were working with.
After much deliberation, we settled on Inchyra Blue paint from Farrow and Ball for the walls, this dark-blue-grey felt very contemporary and gave the space a feeling of real intimacy – it also provided a perfect background for many pops of colour.
Where possible, we salvaged some of the original furniture within the room, we changed handles on drawers and reupholstered an old stool in yellow velvet to complement some of the real stand-out pieces of furniture in the Joules’ suite. Of course, we had to add some bespoke fixtures and fittings, too. In the bathroom are some handmade shelves that we’re particularly proud of.

Dealing with such an old space however isn’t without challenges, the uneven floor meant that many of the pieces of furniture within the room needed levelling out (rest assured they are extremely sturdy) and an old vase suddenly decided to develop a leak.
“In typical fashion, we all pulled together to make this space amazing. One rainy afternoon I found myself dashing to B&Q during a screw shortage.”
Vicky, Partnerships Manager at Joules
When the walls had eventually dried (along with radiators and woodwork) it was finally time to add some finishing touches and unexpected details that Joules is famous for. Our seasonal mood books were brought to life on the walls of the suite. Fabric swatches, prints and tears from the pages of the book can be seen hanging elegantly from the brass bulldog clips. These mini installations also provide a sneak peek into our future collections. They’ll also be updated seasonally, to help bring a little of the outside in.
We like to think of the Joules suite at Another Place as a room that will never really be finished. It’s part of the Joules story and as each season passes the room will help us tell the tale.
It really is all in the detail – but we don’t want to give away everything just yet, you’ll have to wait until you walk through the door to discover all the delights – the door with the brass hare knocker.
Since 2019, when the suite was designed, Joules have continued to update the artwork on the walls, the bed linen and towels, focusing on their seasons colours, prints and textures. As well and being inspired by the surrounding landscape. The suite also features a Joules radio and mugs.
