Community
From creating quality, long-term employment opportunities and wellbeing initiatives to offering potential for career growth, people are at the heart of our decision making. This philosophy extends to the local community through our support of charity partners nominated by our team.

A place to work and learn
After welcoming guests at front desk, there’s a week of taking diners through the wine or whisky list, before a stint on promotion with the marketing team. Every working day is different for gap year students at Another Place. And on days off, the fells and lakes are waiting.
After nine months rotating through professional life at the hotel there’s a chance to take on opportunities to stay with us as a fully-fledged team member. Budding hospitality hopefuls can find out more here.

A more mindful workplace
A stay at Another Place is often a time of peace and rest that calms minds and bodies. So it's only fitting that we make space for our people and work in a way that supports our team be more mindful - and stay mentally well at work.
Our senior managers have completed the Burnt Chef Project training course and we’ve signed-up to the MIND Mental Health at Work commitment – all designed to support our teams’ mental health as much as possible.
From self-care tips to supporting colleagues, the course is all about building teams that are balanced and content, fundamental to creating a happier workplace for a happier hotel.

Resetting shifts
Being able to work well and live well has a really big impact on our team. That’s why our chefs can now work four 10-hour shifts with three days off, and rarely work more than 45 hours a week.
It’s a change across our kitchens that breaks from what has been a chef convention of working five split shifts (and often exceeding 60 hours) in the kitchen each week. At Another Place there’s a minimum of two days off each week, and when there’s three days, there’s a chance to get away for a few days, enjoy quality time with loved ones and friends, or just catch-up on daily life.
Outside the kitchen, we’ve created more flexibility for staff that can work from home for some of their shifts too.

Bringing in local businesses
Harnessing local talents and tapping into nearby wisdom; we regularly draw on the services and talents of stone’s throw businesses to bring our Another Place experiences to life.
This opens up new opportunities to get out on the lake at Ullswater with cold water swimming expert Colin Hill and Ullswater Paddleboarding, or for experiencing Islay's abundant wildlife with Tom from Islay Encounters or tasting the artisan and small batch island flavours of Isle of Islay Gin at 18 Restaurant & Bar. We bring the season inside with floral arrangements from local florists, inspired by the time of year, and at The Lake, our library shelves featuring page-turning inspiration has been carefully curated by bibliophile and local bookshop owner Al Verey of Verey Books. Working with local businesses instils us with even more colour and true local spirit.

Making life easier
Moving for work, trying to find a place to rent, struggling with the high costs of day-to-day essentials. We're helping to tackle the real challenges facing our teams.
By providing subsidised team accommodation, including developing rooms for our team at the Brackenrigg Inn, now part of the Another Place family, just a 10-minute walk from the hotel, or likewise just around the corner from our Islay hotel The Machrie. For staff living in accommodation further afield, we reduce the need to pay for individual travel and the number of vehicles on the road with our team minibus.
And every team member can enjoy discounts across all of the hotel facilities and activities, from our friends and family discount on hotel stays to money off treatments, group wide.

Giving Back
Charity giving is never just a box to tick. Supporting our chosen organisations is right at the heart of how we operate to have a more positive local impact.
Our support currently goes towards preserving the local landscape and precious wildlife with Cumbria Wildlife Trust; supporting young children and their families through life-limiting illnesses with the inspiring team at Jigsaw, a Cumbrian Children’s hospice; and the Ullswater Way Fund, which works to keep the iconic and much-loved 20-mile walking route surrounding the magnificent lake in good walking order.
