Five ways you can travel sustainably around Ullswater

We’re forever looking at ways to reduce our impact here at Another Place, and we’re all about getting active amongst the elements. So any opportunity to get out and about, and do so sustainably, is something we jump with both feet into. Not least because it’s in keeping with preserving the World Heritage status of the Lake District. That’s why we’re working with Cumbria Tourism and Sustainable and Integrated Travel Ullswater (SITU) to develop Ullswater Valley with a travel system that benefits us all - residents, visitors, guests and team alike. We’ve put together five ways you can travel sustainably around Ullswater.

Ullswater Hopper

1. Hop on the Hopper

Another Place is pleased to have underwritten the flagship Ullswater Hopper Bus UB1 service for the past two years, connecting Another Place and other holiday accommodation providers with key points around Ullswater including Pooley Bridge, Howtown and the Ullswater Steamers. Elsewhere, the new 509 runs from Penrith, Lowther, Pooley Bridge, Aira Force, Glenridding, Dockbay, Troutbeck and onto Kewskick. All buses are dog friendly and fares are £2. Children under five travel free. Learn more here.

Cycling around the Lake District

2. Take to two wheels

Fantastic views, changing landscapes and miles of well-documented cycle routes in the Lake District. You definitely want to come riding here! Cycle trails in The Lake District rival the best in the world, from casual bike rides to adventures off the beaten track and long-distance road tours. You’ll find some of our favourite local routes on our cycling in the Lake District page. So bring your bike, or hire one from Arragons Cycle Hire who will deliver to the hotel door, and explore Ullswater on two wheels.

3. Hybrid car hire with Land Rover Discovery

We’re continuing to partner with Land Rover Discovery to offer Another Place guests the opportunity to drive, for a day, either a five-seat Sport plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or a seven-seater family Discovery, inspired by our local walking routes. The initiative offers a greener alternative to travel, with hybrid and fully electric vehicles being more fuel efficient, having lower emissions, and more durable than traditional gas-powered cars. Find out more and book your car here.

4. EV charging

Guests will find five electrical car charging points to use during your stay. These are located in the lower car park adjacent to the sheep shed. Payment is by card and Apple Pay and can be made through the app. These units are untethered, so you will require your own charging lead. Once your car is fully charged we ask if you move it to a regular parking space to ensure other guests can use it too!

5. Smart Travel Planner

Cumbria Tourism’s new free Smart Travel Planner lets you plan your trip to and around The Lake in the most efficient way possible, presenting with you personalised journey routes to help you experience new places with sustainability in mind. Mix it up by travelling by train, bus, car, cycle, and work out exactly how much carbon can be saved by travelling smart.
