Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy

Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy

The Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy, now in its 58th year, returns to Ullswater Yacht Club on 4 & 5 July 2020. First a 1963 celebration regatta in honour of Lord Norman Birkett, who passed away two days after successfully preventing Ullswater from becoming a reservoir in the House of Lords, the club has held the round-the-island race each year since. The Birkett is now the biggest event of the year – a festival of sailing attracting racers of all levels from all over the country.

If you’re not taking to the water to compete in the two days of racing the length Ullswater, non-racers can get up close to the action on a three-hour Birkett Cruise organised by Ullswater Steamers. Cruisers will experience the epic drama of the start line, stretching the full width of the lake, directly in front of the hotel, before following the fleet with a running commentary on board.

Book the Birkett Cruise direct with Ullswater Steamers by visiting www.ullswater-steamers.co.uk.

If you’d rather watch from dry land, the racing boats make for a spectacular sight from the top of Place Fell or along the shoreline. Catch the action from 1pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday.
